Varapodio is situated between the river Marro (the ancient Metauro) and the Calabrò torrent approximately 70 km. from the capital city, Reggio Calabria. It lies at the foot of the Aspromonte mountain , at an elevation of approximately 200 meters above sea level. Its favorable geographic position, allows it to enjoy a climate of mild winters and balmy summers. It is approximately 20 minutes from the shores of the Tyrrhenian or the pines of the Aspromonte. Varapodio is one of the many towns of fertile Plain of Gioia Tauro "where one can find the most beautiful and ancient olive trees of Italy, trees fifteen to twenty meters tall. Under their silver canopy, one can find the gold of the citrus groves, perfumed by oranges and mandarins. In the surrounding countryside we can see shades of greens and browns, in the gardens, and the grassy meadows, tender daisies already in bloom in March" (*). Varapodio has approximately two thousand five hundred inhabitants, and a surface area of 2,932 Ha. It is in close proximity of the towns of Molochio, Terranova S.M., Taurianova, Oppido Mamertina, Rizziconi and Platì. Arriving there is by Provincial Road Dir.111 connecting from Highway A3, at the exit of Gioia Tauro or Palmi. It has been an independent Commune since 4 May 1811. Agriculture is the driving force of the economy, although industry is present with factories specializing in processing oranges and olives. Originally, ancient Varapodio stood approximately 3 km. from its current location in a place called "The Salvatore". It is said to have been founded in 951 AD. Its name has undergone various evolutions from that time: Marrapodi to Barapodi, to Baropedium, to Varapodi, until the the present Varapodio, which has endured since the beginning of 1800. The gradual population transfer to its current location happened about 1600."
